Gum Disease Causing Bad Breath

Gum Disease Causing Bad Breath

Gum Disease Causing Bad BreathGum disease affects about half of American adults, giving many of them bad breath in addition to heightened risks of tooth loss and heart disease. This occurs because, as the pockets created by gum disease continue to develop, the mouth more easily harbors the bacteria that cause foul odors.

How Gum Disease Causes Bad Breath

Gum disease slowly destroys the structures that support teeth, creating spaces where bacteria can thrive. Known as periodontal pockets, these spaces become virtual factories of putrid bacterial waste. Researchers have found that this waste tends to coat the mouths of sufferers, lending a sulfurous odor to the air they expel. This stench is likely to increase significantly when gum disease is allowed to progress through a lack of treatment.

Risk Factors for Gum Disease

Gum disease is most common in adults older than 35, but it is increasingly being found in younger patients. A variety of factors can raise the risk of gum disease, including smoking, diabetes, heredity and medications. With daily brushing and flossing and regular check-ups, patients are better protected against gum disease and the bad breath that comes with it.

Gum disease is a major cause of bad breath in adults. Although gum disease is common and often has a hereditary component, patients can reduce their risk with good dental hygiene and biannual visits to our dentist in Culver City. If gum disease is found, a number of surgical or non-surgical treatments may be recommended based on symptoms and severity. With prompt treatment, the halitosis associated with gum disease can be reduced or eliminated.
